Hi, I’m Kevin.
I’m a North Carolina-based writer, teacher, and musician. I hold an MFA in Composition & Rhetoric from Queens University, with an emphasis on Creative Writing. My novel, Sunflower Dog was published in 2020 and won the Silver Medal for Regional Fiction by The Association of Independent Presses. Other fiction, poetry, and essays have appeared in Tin House, Gulf Coast, Barren Magazine, StorySouth, Barrelhouse, and Dead Mule, among others, as well as the anthologies "Everything But the Baby" and "Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas." My short story collection, Everybody's Gotta Eat, was published in 2009, and my story "Waiting on Something to Happen" won the Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize.
I currently teach writing at Wingate University, where I’ve taught since 2002 (except for a five year stint teaching High School English at Union Academy), and I’ve spent over two decades leading workshops and speaking on writing-related topics at the national level. Before that, I had what I call "another life" — as a professional auctioneer, selling everything from a child's wagon to multi-million dollar art and real estate, which left me entirely at ease in front of a crowd, microphone in hand.
When I’m not writing or teaching, I’m playing music — I’ve performed publicly since 1978 and currently play with the Lazy Old String Band. And if I’m not playing music, I’m hiking, rock climbing, or working in my garden.
I’m glad you stopped by my site. Make yourself at home, browse around, and let me know if there’s anything you need!
